The Scientific Research Unit at Kingdom University organized a distinguished research seminar entitled “Research on Artificial Intelligence Applications in Medicine and Healthcare” on the morning of Thursday, May 29, 2025, at the university campus. The event witnessed a wide attendance of doctors, academics, and researchers from various health and educational institutions in Bahrain, where participants discussed the latest innovations in the field of artificial intelligence and its growing role in improving the quality of healthcare.
The seminar was opened by the President of the University, Professor Dr. Hassan bin Rafdan Al-Hajhoj, with a welcoming speech in which he emphasized the importance of integrating modern technology into the medical sector, pointing out that artificial intelligence represents a qualitative leap in diagnosis and treatment, and contributes to raising the efficiency of health services and improving patients’ health.
The program included a series of scientific lectures, starting with a speech delivered via video conferencing by Professor Mohammed Rashid Al-Faqih, Professor of Cardiac Surgery and Chairman of the Board of Trustees at Kingdom University, titled “Artificial Intelligence and Medicine.”
Professor Nader Mohammed Al-Bastaki, Vice President for Academic Affairs and Scientific Research, indicated in his speech that this seminar is the first in a series of seminars that aim to achieve impact from the research conducted at the university in society, through meeting with specialists from various sectors in the community.
Dr. Jassim Haji, Executive Advisor at the Nasser Center for Research in Artificial Intelligence and Data Science, delivered a lecture entitled “Artificial Intelligence in Bahrain: The Past and the Future,” in which he reviewed the development of AI applications in the Kingdom.
Dr. Mostafa Qurban, IT Consultant at the King Fahad Military Medical Complex in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, gave a presentation in which he addressed the importance of cybersecurity in protecting health data and its pivotal role in supporting digital transformation in the health sector.
In a notable lecture, Dr. Nadia Matar, Consultant in Plastic and Burn Surgery, gave a presentation entitled “Artificial Intelligence in Plastic Surgery,” in which she addressed how AI technologies can bring transformation to this field through enhancing the accuracy of cosmetic evaluations, personalizing treatment plans, and predicting surgical outcomes, which contributes to raising the level of safety and satisfaction among patients.
Also participating from Kingdom University were:
- Dr. Shafiq UL Rahman, who gave a presentation on the use of artificial intelligence and wearable devices in early detection, emergency alerts, and monitoring vital signs.
- Dr. Hassan Al-Lawati, who reviewed advanced technologies in medical diagnosis of lung diseases using deep learning algorithms and compressed models.
- Ms. Marwa Assem, who discussed the role of AI in predicting tumors and discovering biomarkers through DNA analysis.
The seminar concluded with closing remarks by the President of the University, in which he emphasized the importance of continuing scientific research in this vital field, and strengthening cooperation between academic and medical institutions to accelerate the adoption of artificial intelligence technologies in healthcare.
